Synopsis

Risking her life

To save a knight!

Disguising herself as her late twin brother keeps Avva Carpenter, and her family, safe. Until Sir William Devereux arrives in her town. As the castle’s stable master, Avva can’t avoid the knight—or the desire he instantly stirs in her. He’s everything she never knew a nobleman could be: honest, kind, brave. When danger surrounds them, the only way to help William is to reveal her true identity, but can she trust him enough?

My Review:

When Knight William arrives at Caerden he is met with a spooky silence, accusing looks and hardly any women. It comes to light later that it is dangerous to be a woman in Caerden, they have previously been attacked and even killed. Therefore, when stranger William arrives to prepare the town and make safety checks before King Edward III arrives for his tour, he is regarded as trouble and someone to be feared by the town’s folk.

Disguised as her dead twin brother to protect herself and family in the dangerous town she resides in, Avva works as a stable master. When she meets newcomer William, their attraction is instant. He is left very confused as he has never been attracted to a man before. William finds Avva very feminine and he suspects she is hiding something. One evening after drinking in the tavern, he follows her home and Avva unknowingly reveals her true self and his suspicions are confirmed, she is in fact a woman.

They overhear a conversation, which alerts them to Baron Caerden’s plot against the King, to be carried out when he visits the castle in a weeks’ time. With a king to save, can William keep his mind on the job and keep them all safe, including Avva? And with William and Avva’s attraction growing every time they are together, can Avva trust William with her secret? And most importantly, will they give into temptation even though they both know they can’t have a future together?

I liked how strong, loyal and family orientated Avva is, she had clearly been through a lot. Although she could leave Caerden to ensure her own safety, she won’t go until her brothers finish their apprenticeships and are able to settle elsewhere and support themselves. William was also a likable character, sometimes leading men in romance novels can be brooding and grumpy, but I warmed to his character straight away.

I highly recommend The Knight’s Maiden in Disguise, this story was action packed and very enjoyable to read. I was pulled in and intrigued immediately, I finished it in only two sittings! I am really looking forward to reading more of Ella’s books in future.
