I have recently finished my debut novel, Gray, which is the story of 14th century Northumberland knight Thomas Gray, a man renown for his fighting abilities as chronicled in his son’s treatise on English history, Scalacronica. The novel begins with 17 year old Gray left for dead after an attack by William Wallace, and traces his life through the battle of Bannockburn, where he led a suicidal charge into Robert the Bruce’s troops. In between these watershed events he enters into an arranged marriage, saves the life of noble Henry de Beaumont (multiple times), and engaged in battles both large and small. Drawn on historical accounts, Gray is the story of a man of his time: a knight, a husband, a father, a friend.
I
first became interested in the life Thomas Gray while researching the First War
of Scottish Independence. Gray’s life fascinated me. As a casual medieval
historian, I loved learning about Thomas Gray and, more broadly, what it
was like to live during the turbulent years of First War of Scottish
Independence. Aside from Scalacronica, other ancient records
attest to Thomas Gray’s remarkable life and, where there are gaps, it has
been fun to fill in what might have been.
As for me, I am a resident of Rochester, NY, USA where I live with my husband,
son, and two Jack Russell terriers. I have had work published in
“Resolve,” a health-related newsletter, along with a blurb in Parent
Soup’s A-Z Guide to your Toddler. Aside from writing, I am a voracious
reader and struggling runner.
