Lila Marleigh is very much in charge of her own life. She is
a businesswoman in early 19th century London, she owns her own successful
salon. Slightly eccentric and very strong willed, she has no intention of getting
married, or conforming to what society expects of a half Indian woman in Regency
England.
Lila first meets Ivor Tristram when he accuses her of being
his father’s mistress. On the same night someone from Lila’s past comes to ask
her for help. This also involves Ivor’s family, so the two of them investigate
the mystery together. They have chemistry from the start and it’s only a matter
of time before they start to fall for each other.
Although I admired her determination, and courage, I found
some of Lila’s choices questionable at times, but I think these choices highlighted
her impulsive nature. I loved the ending she was given and that she felt she
could pursue her dreams and love, without having to give up her identity or independence.
This is not just a regency love story, many important topics
were also tackled such as racism, unwanted advances from forceful men, class
and place in society, and how poor women often had no choice but to turn to sex
work, to make money for themselves and their families.
The
perfect book for you if you like regency history, mystery and romance! The ending paved the way for book two, which I am looking
forward too, and I do think some of the unanswered questions in Unladylike
Lessons in Love will be answered in future books.
