Book review - A Lady on the Edge of Ruin

Synopsis

My Review

It is no secret how much I enjoy Lotte R. James’ writing. I have reviewed both The Housekeeper of Thornhallow Hall and The Viscount's Daring Miss, and I've read her other books too. Lotte doesn’t just write a brilliant historical romance, her characters are so well written, and their individual stories and journeys are just as important as the romance element of the story. A Lady on the Edge of Ruin, set at the end of the Georgian era, was no exception. It is a powerful and moving book. The story has cameos and mentions characters from previous books by the author, but you do not have to read them to understand the plot of this story (although I highly recommend you do!)

Lady Mary Spencer has had small roles in some of the authors previous books, so it was great to finally read her story. Her family members have not always made choices deemed acceptable by society, and although Mary hates being part of the ton, she does it to represent her family. The power that the position brings helps her to feel safe and secure. But she sits on scandals, trauma and secrets of her own, and if anyone found out, it could see her and her family cast out from society.

Luca Guaro has no title or wealth and provides for his family by being a companion to wealthy women. He is younger than Mary, and having helped her in the past, he sees past the cold mask she wears in public and knows she holds secrets and pain. He has seen glimpses of the real her and knows a friendship or relationship is worth pursuing, although a public affair between the two could be scandalous. Mary slowly starts to remove her barriers and open up to Luca, and what starts off as a secret steamy arrangement, sees the couple falling in love. But will love be enough to guarantee a happily ever after when someone from Mary’s dark past arrives looking for revenge.

A Lady on the Edge of Ruin is not only a wonderful historical romance, which will see you routing for Luca and Mary from the start, but it also highlights the dark side of society. It explores Mary’s relationships, not only with Luca, but with herself, family, friends and those who have caused her pain. Yet another fantastic book from the brilliant Lotte R. James. Highly recommended!

* Note: A Lady on the Edge of Ruin deals with some serious subjects such as trauma, past sexual assault, familial dysfunction and traumatic birth. None of these subjects are described in great detail, but I thought it was worth including in the review.
